Cavity solitons in bidirectional lasers.
We show theoretically that a broad area bidirectional laser with slightly different cavity losses for the two counterpropagating fields sustains cavity solitons (CSs). These are complementary; i.e., there is a bright (dark) CS in the field with larger (smaller) losses. Interestingly, the CSs can be written or erased by injecting suitable pulses into any of the two counterpropagating fields.

We investigate a control of the motion of localized structures (LSs) of light by means of delay feedback in the transverse section of a broad area nonlinear optical system. The delayed feedback is found to induce a spontaneous motion of a solitary LS that is stationary and stable in the absence of feedback. We focus our analysis on an experimentally relevant system, namely the vertical-cavity s...
متن کاملBright solitons in cavity-QED arrays containing two-level atoms
We examine the problem of polariton soliton formation in the array of weakly coupled optical cavities, each containing an ensemble of ultracold non-interacting two-level atoms. An effective complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (GLE) is derived in the continuum limit taking into account the effects of cavity field dissipation and atomic polarization dephasing. Bright solitons are found to be support...
متن کاملCavity Solitons in Driven VCSELs above Threshold
CSs have been theoretically predicted and recently experimentally demonstrated in broad area, vertical cavity driven semiconductor lasers (VCSELs) slightly below the lasing threshold. Above threshold, the simple adiabatic elimination of the polarization variable is not correct, leading to oscillatory instabilities with a spuriously high critical wave-number. To achieve real insight on the compl...
متن کاملCavity solitons in broad-area vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers below threshold
Cavity solitons are stationary self-organized bright intensity peaks which form over a homogeneous background in the section of broad area radiation beams. They are generated by shining a writing/erasing laser pulse into a nonlinear optical cavity, driven by a holding beam. The ability to control their location and their motion by introducing phase or amplitude gradients in the holding beam mak...
